Men’s Shed Gathering 2018

500 men, 32 counties, 4 sporting legends, the Queen’s favourite fishmonger and a Lord Mayor.

Pairc Ui Chaoimh has never witnessed anything quite like the Men’s Sheds Gathering 2018, which brought all the aforementioned to Cork for two memorable days of fun and camaraderie.

Ably compered by Irish Country Living editor Mairead Lavery, the event reflected the enormous strides made by Irish sheds in the space of just a few short years. Michael Ring TD, Minister for Rural and Community Development, opened proceedings via a short pre-recorded video, lavishing praise on the movement and its impact on communities.

Other speakers included Lord Mayor of Cork Clllr. Mick Finn, Fergal Fox of the HSE, David Gillick, Finbarr Kennelly of Haven Pharmacy, Topline ambassador Donncha O’Callaghan and philanthropist Alan Kerins.

Four sheds – Kilbeggan, Rostrevor, Dundalk and Ballina – awed the crowds with tales of their achievements, achievements which many in the audience could relate to and, indeed, match.

Throughout the day, hundreds of men thronged our Malehealth.ie.ie Expo, where dozens of partner organisations had set up stands offering resources, advice and freebies on all aspects of men’s health.

Day one of the Gathering closed with a gala dinner at Rochestown Park Hotel, while day two included tours of Co. Cork attractions for those who stayed on.

The IMSA would like to thank each and every shed and shed member who attended for making the day such a memorable one. The IMSA would also like to thank partners and sponsors, including:

Healthy Minds Colouring Competition

Don Conroy launches the Haven Pharmacy Healthy Minds Colouring Competition

Here at Haven Pharmacy we want to encourage children to be more creative and get involved in arts and crafts this autumn with the launch of our Healthy Minds Colouring Competition to be judged by a panel including legendary artist and TV personality Don Conroy. With the help of our customers we conducted some research in July which has revealed the following:

  • 1 in 3 children spend a minimum of two hours daily in front of a screen
  • 20% of children engage in arts and crafts every day
  • 75% of parents to be worried about the potential negative effect technology may be having on their children’s mental and physical health.
  • 80% of parents would like to see their children involved in more arts and crafts.

The Haven Healthy Minds Colouring Competition is the perfect way to encourage children to stretch their creativity in arts and crafts during Back to School time. But wait, there’s more! The competition will have two separate age categories for kids aged 4 – 7 years old and 8 – 12 years old. Entrants are invited to showcase their skills and colour in an illustration drawn by judge Don Conroy.

There are two prizes per Haven Pharmacy to be won at Local Level – that’s 100 Art Kits to be won! These prizes are split one per age category per Pharmacy. Each winner will receive a Complete Art Studio Kit – this premium 91 piece set includes 60 Colouring Pencils, 20 Watercolour Paints, 8 Sketching Pencils, Paintbrush, Eraser & Sharpener – everything your child needs for the full Art Experience!

Win a 4* family holiday to Delphi Adventure Resort

There are two prizes to be won at National Level. These prizes are split one per age category. The national prizes are 1 x Family Holiday (2 Adults & 2 Kids under 18) per winner which includes 3 night stay in a Luxury Suite in Delphi Adventure Resort, full Irish breakfast each morning, 4 adventure tokens per person, free bike hire for the family on one day of choice, 3 course evening meal in The 814 Restaurant on two evenings of your choice and thermal suite experience for the parents… What a prize!

Speaking at the launch of the competition Denise Carroll, Marketing & Communications Executive for Haven said “We know that parents are concerned about how technology effects their children’s physical and mental health and with children going back to school there is now an added pressure with school work, so it’s an ideal time to introduce this campaign. The ‘Healthy Minds’ colouring competition has been devised to encourage young children to spend less time in front of screens and to reignite their creativity in an era where technology is consuming so much of young people’s attention. Colouring has many different benefits including helping children to focus, relax and stimulate their imagination.”

Having encouraged many children to express their creativity over the years Don Conroy is back judging the competition again this year. Speaking at the launch of the campaign Don said “I am delighted to be working with Haven again on this wonderful initiative. Although technology is brilliant for children it is as important as ever for kids to stretch their creativity through art. Colouring is a great starting point to spark an interest in the creative arts with children and a fun way for children to take a break from technology. We want to encourage parents and children alike, to take quality time together enjoy the simple pleasure of art and crafts.”

So go on, encourage your littles ones to get creative and they could win the family a 4* Luxury Holiday! To enter the Healthy Minds Colouring Competition, just pop into your local Haven Pharmacy and pick up your entry form.

Minister Ring announces €500,000 to support work of Irish Men’s Sheds

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Mr Michael Ring T.D., today announced the provision of €500,000 to support the work of Men’s Sheds throughout Ireland. This capital funding provides small grants to individual Men’s Sheds in order to enable them to purchase equipment or to carry out minor works to improve their premises.

Speaking at the announcement of the funding in Claremorris Men’s Shed, Co Mayo today, Minister Ring said: “The emergence of the Men’s Sheds in recent years has been an extremely positive development for communities across Ireland and I have decided to introduce this funding in recognition of the wonderful contribution they make at a local level.

“In towns, villages and cities which I have visited as Minister, I am continually struck by the great work that local Men’s Sheds do in supporting important local initiatives. Among their ranks they have great expertise, experience and know-how and make a massive contribution to their local communities.

“For example, in Claremorris Men’s Shed, which I visited today, the members were very involved in providing stewarding and making signage for the Claremorris Darkness Into Light event. They also made scarecrows in their workshop which were displayed around the town during the local Claremorris Scarecrow Festival. I’m aware that many Men’s Sheds support Tidy Towns groups as they prepare their local communities for that competition.

“There are approximately 350 Men’s Sheds groups which are affiliated to the Irish Men’s Sheds Association, and I would like to see as many of them as possible avail of this funding. It is up to the individual Sheds to submit applications to their Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) in order to avail of the funding and I urge them to do so by the 31 August deadline. Application details can be found on my Department’s website (www.drcd.gov.ie) and on Local Authority websites.

“Men’s Sheds offer a safe, comfortable and inclusive environment where men of all ages can share skills, work on meaningful projects and connect with their communities. The funding is being provided following discussions with the Irish Men’s Shed Association. I have asked them to provide details to their members over the coming period on how to apply. I encourage all Men’s Sheds to avail of the support and I wish the Irish Men’s Shed Association every success as it grows and develops.”

Barry Sheridan, CEO of the Irish Men’s Sheds Association, welcomed the news, stating: “This announcement is the most significant development in the history of Men’s Sheds in Ireland, and we as an Association are delighted to have played a role in bringing it about, via our consultations with Minister Ring’s Department. This level of support reflects the impact Sheds are making on communities throughout Ireland.
“It’s a tribute to the work of all our staff and volunteers, as well as to every single Men’s Shed member and supporter who has helped make our Sheds what they are today. Minister Ring’s support is opening a new chapter for Irish Sheds, and we look forward to working with the Department through a bright and sustainable future for Men’s Sheds in Ireland.”
